Surfing or “acuaplano” in the native language, is a favorite pastime of locals and tourists. You will have to travel a bit to get to the biggest and best surfing conditions. The first Huatulco surfing and boogie board contest was held May 1, 2003 at Copalita beach.
You can learn to surf by contacting any of the schools. Or if you are an experienced surfer, you’ll want to go to the mouth of the Rio Copalita, which is the only surfing location near Huatulco. Puerto Escondido is a world-class surfing destination 2 hours west of Huatulco, favored by experienced surfers.
